About the Cafe
It all began in 2003 on the corner of Waverly Place and Gay Street. Jonathan Rubinstein, Gabby Rubinstein, and their parents Richard and Alice opened the doors that summer, and the cafe quickly became the heart of the West Village. Regulars come from every walk of life, including artists, photographers, writers, students, and visitors passing through. The space has a small patio with two iconic benches where you can spot neighbors enjoying their daily cup of Joe. Inside, there are just a handful of seats, but they are often filled with familiar faces. Everyone feels like a regular here, whether it is your very first visit or your 20th year walking through the doors. Over time, we have watched kids grow up in this space and return years later with children of their own. Fun fact: before Joe Coffee, this spot was once a dry cleaner. Only in New York!
