The Atlas Collection is a line of limited-release coffees intended to highlight our sourcing values—quality, ethics, collaboration, and integrity—our tools for exploring the complex world of coffee. This coffee from South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a wonderful example of integrity.

This complex and tropical coffee comes to us through our sourcing partner, Mighty Peace Coffee, a social impact coffee company born out of the Congolese peace movement by an international team of business leaders, coffee experts and innovators, community organizers and human rights defenders. It’s Mighty Peace Coffee’s belief that coffee has the potential to play an important role in bringing peace and prosperity to society in a post-conflict time, with the growth of specialty coffee providing community-directed paths from poverty and violence to stability and growth. Grown in the South Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, this lot of SL34 was produced by a cooperative of smallholder women farmers. High altitudes, careful processing, coffee variety, and a gender-equity-centered community contribute to its high quality, cleanly pressed, and impressive flavor profile.

From start to finish, this coffee is full of juicy tropical fruits and exceptional florals: pineapple, kiwi, mango, and coffee blossom. And it comes as no surprise that a pleasant caramel sweetness pulls through with each sip—in Swahili, Mapendo means “love.”

The Story

Mapendo, which is Swahili for “love”, is entirely women-grown. Many producers behind the coffee are widows as a result of the conflicts that have destabilized parts of the DCR, and see gender justice as a key pillar in the foundation of their business. To incorporate these values directly into their practices, Mapendo producers have worked on projects aimed at dismantling systemic inequalities and creating opportunities for women to diversify and increase revenue streams. In great awe of the work of Congolese coffee farmers against enormous odds in dangerous conditions, we are proud to be able to offer the Mapendo women’s coffee to the Joe community.

Map of the Democratic Republic of Congo
Coffees in this region are harvested from February to June and September to December. The Mapendo is a washed SL34 grown between 1480-2000 meters above sea level with complex fruit and floral flavors—blackberry, rose—embedded in sturdy structures of sugar browning sweetness—mango and caramel.
