The Zelaya family has been producing quality coffee in and around Antigua, Guatemala for generations. They have grown their coffee business from a single farm to several estates and a mill, called Bella Vista, located at the bottom of Volcán Agua. Bella Vista processes coffee for the Zelaya family farms as well as those of farmers nearby. Their state-of-the-art equipment, quality screening processes, and ideal balance of rain and sun allow them to produce some of the most consistent, quality coffee in Antigua. We at Joe have had the pleasure of visiting this mill and its surrounding farms, as well as sending a dozen of our own baristas to work in the Bella Vista Cafe in Antigua earlier this year.
Within the rich volcanic soil of this region is grown a particular coffee called Bella Carmona, made up of peak harvest coffees from several of the estates that the Zelayas own and manage. Farm workers are trained to pick only the ripest red cherries, and return season to season to harvest these same fields. This coffee is washed and sun-dried at the Bella Vista mill.
For every bag of Bella Carmona sold, Joe is donating $2 to Funcafé, the Guatemalan Coffee Foundation for Rural Development, to support relief efforts following the Volcán de Fuego eruption
