Coffee, Supply Streams, & Power: Part 1 – The History of Coffee

June 16 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Take a step back through centuries of world coffee history with us. In one hour, we cover the history of the modern-day coffee supply stream—a centuries-old structure deeply rooted in slavery. As coffee consumers and professionals, one way we confront coffee’s ever-present backdrop of colonialism is to actively work on gaining a deeper knowledge of these systems that made coffee production possible throughout history, and use that information to influence the decisions we make today. Like all other kinds of collective problem solving, we need to define the issue in order to access its solution. When it comes to dismantling systemic inequality, understanding those systems and what they were set up to achieve is the first step in reckoning with the basis of the coffee industry we take part in today.
